Wanna be a know it all or at least be able to participate in a conversation about the awards season - well now you can too. Don't feel left out...check out this handy guide on everything that will keep you too in the loop and who's gotten what, could get whatever and god only knows why they won.

From Entertainment Weekly (EW.com) -- Awards Cheat Sheet

http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,1569832_20164555_20166311,00.html

I found this really helpful! Viggo appears on page 2 of 6 and looks like it's the SAG (Screen Actors Guild) awards next. Good luck Viggo. cheers

(Note: this thread is mainly intended for people such as myself who have difficulty keeping up with the times on awards. No insult is intended. Very Happy )

Yes Vigs I can surely relate to what you say. Here in Canada I am only familiar with a couple of awards which are the Junos and the Aboriginal Peoples' Awards. And sometimes even around the water cooler they are talked about.

For those who don't know much about the SAG statuette itself here is some information and a picture. A lovely designed piece I must say. Smile

It has a short history as it has only been handed out since 1995. The statuette is called The Actor® and was originally sculpted by Edward Saenz and designed by Jim Heimann and Jim Barrett. The statuettes are cast under the supervision of Brett Barney.

The Actor weighs 12 pounds and stands 16 inches tall. Numbered sequentially, 456 statuettes have been awarded since the first one was presented in 1995.

Information found here: http://theenvelope.latimes.com/awards/sag/env-sagstatue-18jan18,0,7074492.story?coll=env-sag

Viggo didn't get to take home the SAG award this year which went to Daniel Day Lewis. Mr. Lewis dedicated the award to actor Heath Ledger.

But....Viggo was one of the presenters at this year's SAG awards and seemed pleased to present the supporting actress award to Ruby Dee for American Gangster.

Seems Viggo's making a fashion statement with each and every appearance these days. He certainly looked great at the awards tonight. Seems I'm not the only one who thinks so.

Screen Actors red carpet sparkles with gems, color

Quote :
The men traditionally rely on the black tuxedo, but Viggo Mortensen, nominated for best actor for "Eastern Promises," showed up in the most distinctive male outfit -- a blue and red pinstriped suit with vest and sash.

"I grew up in Argentina and wanted to wear the colors of my soccer team," he said.

And from CBC Arts and Entertainment:

Quote :
VIGGO IN HIGH FASHION: Viggo Mortensen, nominated for a leading actor Oscar for "Eastern Promises," turned his share of heads Sunday night when he arrived sporting a full beard and decked out in a flashy blue-and-red, pinstriped tuxedo.

Turned his share of heads, eh? Suspect Uh... like he needs a flashy outfit? Basketball

Here he is with Spanish actor Javier Bardem on the red carpet.

Having watched the second half of the awards I was surprised to see how often the camera was on him. It was great seeing him enjoy himself not to mention his helping Ms. Dee on stage and kissing her hand too. Very Happy What a gent! I love you

And here's a better one. Very Happy Good to see him up on the podium - soon it will be to receive an award. Very Happy

By the way, that tie looks the same as the one Nikolai wore at the end of EP. scratch Sure why not! Cool

Oh, thanks, Kal!

He looks so nice and good like a real gentleman.
Just like I translated yesterday in the horoscope thread. He always appears with dignity. He is a gentleman. I wasn't surprised that he wore the San Lorenzo colours. It is his dear, little football/soccer club and we just have to get used to it. To me it's ok. I can live with his football/soccer interest.

It was a little sad that he didn't win a prize.

I wonder if Viggo was the model for the statuette. It looks very much like him. Except for that the dimple isn't there.

Yes, the movie and everybody who took part in making it deserve that it gets an Oscar.

But we can't be sure it gets an award! We just have to cross our fingers and toes.

And if Viggo gets an Oscar it's not sure that he will be there to receive it. I have read that if the writers strike goes on he will not be there because he sympathize with the writers.

Wow! I saw the movie 'Shake Hands With the Devil" with some friends last night. Roy Dupuis is uncanny in that movie as Monsieur Dallaire. Such anguish.... Sad So if Viggo is up against him for best actor for a Canadian Genie award he not only has stiff competition but nominated among the best. Gordon Pinsent will also be a tough cookie to beat. I am just so pleased and proud to see Viggo nominated along with some of Canada's finest. Whoodda thunk it, eh? Aplaude The man is truly global. th_at

Here is what the Canadian Genie award looks like:

Quote :

In 1968, sculptor Sorel Etrog was commissioned to create a statue for the Canadian Film Awards and produced the striking bronze figure. The Etrog exemplifies this artist's interest in the concept of growth. It is, according to it's sculptor, a standing figure whose focus of energy is concentrated in the upper part of the body, thus reflecting the process involved in transforming an idea or concept into a visual reality. The parallel between sculpture and filmmaking is manifest in the Etrog.

You can read more about the statuette here: http://www.genieawards.ca/Genie28/infostatue.cfm

I like the idea of aligning actors with the word artists. Some people never see the connection.

Oh, Kal!

That's a very nice Canadian award.

Our Danish "Bodil" award is a woman figure. It's named after 2 of the greatest Danish actress we have ever had: Bodil Ibsen and Bodil Kjer.

I don't have a picture of it.

I forgot that we have a Robert award too. I'll find out if a foreign movie has received one today. I'll tell you more if I find some information about it.

BAFTA was founded in 1947 as The British Film Academy, by David Lean, Alexander Korda, Carol Reed, Charles Laughton, Roger Manvell and others. In 1958, the Academy merged with The Guild of Television Producers and Directors to form The Society of Film and Television, which eventually became The British Academy of Film and Television Arts in 1976.
BAFTA's stated charitable remit is to "support, develop and promote
the art forms of the moving image, by identifying and rewarding
excellence, inspiring practitioners and benefiting the public". In
addition to high profile awards ceremonies BAFTA runs a year-round
programme of educational events including film screenings and tribute
evenings. BAFTA is supported by a membership of around 6000 people from
the film, television and video game industries.
BAFTA's main office is on Piccadilly in London, but it also has branches in Scotland (BAFTA Scotland), Wales (BAFTA Cymru), New York City (BAFTA East Coast) and Los Angeles (BAFTA/LA).
The Academy's awards are in the form of a theatrical mask designed by American sculptor Mitzi Cunliffe, which was commissioned by the Guild of Television Producers in 1955.
Since 1989, the Los Angeles branch, BAFTA/LA, holds its own awards ceremony each year, called the Britannia Awards.
In November 2007 a special tribute programme was shown on ITV in the UK celebrating 60 years of the organisation called Happy Birthday BAFTA.

practitioners and benefiting the public.
With an expert
industry membership of nearly 6500 individuals, globally, we focus
attention on the highest achievements of films, video games and
television programmes shown in the UK each year in order to motivate
and inspire those who make them, and to educate and develop the taste
of those who watch them. The promotion of excellence extends far
beyond our Awards ceremonies. As a charitable organisation, the Academy
plays an equally powerful role at our headquarters at 195 Piccadilly,
across our nations and regions, in cinemas, schools and communities in
the UK and US.Giving our members, the industry and the public
the opportunity to learn first-hand from leading practitioners is one
of the key services the Academy provides. By showcasing the crafts of

The BAFTA awards will take place on February 10th and according to The Telegraph UK Viggo is anticipated to attend.

Viggo is nominated as best leading actor and the film Eastern Promises as best British film. So it looks like DC and VM will team up again in London for these awards. I am not sure why EP is being nominated for best British Film. I am curious about the criteria for being eligible in these awards. scratch Oh well I hope they win. Very Happy

Thanks Snowy for information on these awards. So now Viggo has been nominated for awards in England too. cheers

Looks like you are right, Vigs. cheers It was the Danish Film Academy Robert Awards.

'Eastern Promises', starring Denmark's own Viggo Mortensen, received the Film Academy's nod as the Best Non-American Foreign Film. Mortensen is nominated for an Oscar in the Best Actor category.
