Oscars and awards aside, Viggo's other artistic abilities will be on display when he will open an exhibit in Iceland in May of this year.

From the Iceland Review:

Photos by Viggo Mortensen Displayed in Iceland

Danish-American actor Viggo Mortensen, currently nominated for an Oscar for his role in Eastern Promises, will open an exhibition of his photographs in Reykjavík Museum of Photography on May 31, entitled "Skovbo" in Danish, or “Forest People.”

“He is preparing a special exhibition for us,” director of Reykjavík Museum of Photography María Karen Sigurdardóttir told Morgunbladid. “These are pictures of nature, taken in Iceland and elsewhere.”

“Preparations are going well,” Sigurdardóttir added. “Mortensen said he wants to sell his pictures for a low price and the profits are supposed to go to the Iceland Nature Conservation Association.”

Apart from acting and taking photographs, Mortensen has also published poetry books, written music and held exhibitions of his paintings. He has published five photography books with his own work.

Mortensen has visited Iceland a few times in the past few years and he recently published a book about the Icelandic artist Georg Gudni Hauksson.

The proceeds from the show in Reykjavik will go to the Iceland Nature Conservation Association. I found a link to the site it is in English but there is also a link to the Icelandic one which is more up to date. There are some interesting projects with the WWF that you can read about and a lot of them are in English.

I think it will be more easy for European fans to go to Roskilde in October and see the exhibition there.

And if you for instance go by aeroplane to Copenhagen Airport (Kastrup) you can see in "Rejseplanen" (the travel plan) how to go to Roskilde from Copenhagen. The best is to take a train which goes directly to Roskilde. So please don't take a train which goes to Köge because it may not pass Roskilde.

Here is the link:

You better have this one, too: http://online.citybreak.com/Search/Search.aspx?onlineid=480252064 about Copenhagen.

And this one about the city of Roskilde and tourist information:

Event of the Week: Viggo Mortensen Exhibition

Reykjavík Museum of Photography Exhibition:
Viggo Mortensen – “Skovbo”

Reykjavík Museum of Photography proudly presents the exhibition “Skovbo” by Viggo Mortensen.

It is not surprising that many people would rather connect the name of this multi-talented artist with acting than photography. He has been very successful as a movie star and was recently nominated for the Oscars Academy Awards.

However, Mortensen’s creation is not restricted to this one art form. Thus acting is only a part of a larger whole as for many years he has been active with photography in which he has earned himself a good reputation, and also with painting, poetry and music.

On display until August 31.

I hope the exhibition is a smash hit! More people will want the book then I think.

From Icelandic Review Online

Quote:
Viggo Mortensen at Reykjavík Museum of Photography

Danish-American actor and artist Viggo Mortensen will hold an exhibition of his photographs, entitled “Skovbo” at the Reykjavík Museum of Photography between May 31 and August 31.

Skovbo means “the one who lives in the forest” in Danish. The exhibition is wrapped around the concept of nature, but the main focus is on trees.

Mortensen became world-famous as an actor for his role as Aragon in Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy by Peter Jackson. He is also a painter, photographer and a poet.

Mortensen’s publication company recently published a collection of his photos, poets and paintings about trees and nature. The book will be sold at the exhibition.

Don't you just love that photo? What I've always noticed about his photography is the 'what you don't see' aspect and where it takes you. The questions it prompts about the surroundings you don't see, what was happening before and after this picture was taken. I would call his pictures provocative photography. It's not about the technique at all.

Last weekend when we celebrated my sisters birthday she showed us some pictures she has just had developed. I saw some pics of her garden door and I couldn't help laughing and asking her when she wants to make an exhibition. Many years ago she photographed a red Danish letterbox from all sides. Her photos are a little similar to Viggos.

From an announcement on the Reykjavik Museum site on Skovbo the exhibition which starts this Saturday.

Quote:
Viggo Mortensen has travelled widely and has lived in various places in his life. He uses his immediate surroundings where he is staying any time as the subject of his photographs. Whether it is rays of sunlight breaking into a thick tree foliage in Krakow, Poland, a man climbing stairs in the Ural Mountains, a sun-scorched bush in New Mexico or sedge at the edge of a forest in Zealand, Denmark, the way he perceives the world is clearly apparent in his photographs, which have a certain lyrical and dreamlike quality to them.

I don't know if my sister can scan the pics into her computer and send them to me. I'm sure you will see some similars between Viggos pics and Annes (my sister).

Thank you very much, Kal!

Viggo in Iceland without the beard and in the middle of an earthquake (it was 50 kms. away from Reykjavik but close enough so they could feel it there, too). Hopefully the people I know from other sites who are in Iceland just now are all well!

Visit here : http://www.mbl.is/mm/frettir/innlent/2008/05/31/mikill_ahugi_a_myndum_viggo/

You'll be pleased to learn that the opening of Viggo's exhibit with him in attendance went exceptionally well. He was on hand to sign books and as usual do his very best at looking handsome, sexy, youthful and promoting his soccer team. Twisted Evil
